The shift is no longer incremental
In October 2026, technology is no longer a function that supports the business. It is the medium through which a person is identified, a commercial conversation is opened and contact is resumed. Anyone who still treats digitization as a parallel project operates with friction: slower cycles, incomplete data and a first impression that fades the next day.
The transformation is not about buying more tools. It is about shortening the distance between the meeting and the action. That distance is measured in hours, not quarters.
Digital identity has become infrastructure
Gartner estimates that about 500 million smartphone users will be using digital identity wallets in 2026. In parallel, European Union member states must offer an EU Digital Identity Wallet this same year, under eIDAS 2. This is not a trade-show announcement: it is a regulatory obligation that turns verifiable identity into a commercial utility.
The practical effect is clear. Customers, suppliers and colleagues start introducing themselves with credentials that live on the phone. A static PDF and a context-free email fall short against a profile that can be updated and shared in seconds.
Artificial intelligence leaves the loose-assistant role
Gartner describes in 2026 a wave of agentic AI in sales: prospecting, first outreach and follow-up. The September 2026 research insists on the point many companies ignore: the agent needs a trust harness and company-specific controls. Without brand, compliance and data rules, the agent accelerates error as fast as it accelerates sending.
Cloudflare, in August 2026, went further: it framed wallets and identity for AI agents that transact. The human salesperson is no longer the only actor who needs a verifiable identity. The software that acts on their behalf needs one too.
Professional exchange is already a flow
Sharing contact data stopped being a one-off gesture. In 2026, Apple Wallet leads digital card sharing. QR still accounts for about 28% of shares. Lock-screen QR grew around 749% year over year and now covers about 13%. NFC cards are only 7% of shares, but they grew 124% versus the previous year; the NFC card market is projected at a CAGR near 14.8% toward 2034.
Those channels matter. The value, however, appears after the tap: contact enrichment, CRM entry and a follow-up in the first 24 to 72 hours.
What a leadership team must decide this year
- Where the team’s professional identity lives: an updatable profile, not a loose file.
- Which data is captured at the meeting and which fields are completed later.
- Who controls the AI agents that write to customers.
- After how many hours a new contact is considered cold.
Companies that answer those questions stop collecting software and start running a system. Those that do not keep measuring activity —meetings, scans, messages— and not relationships.
Operating judgment, not fashion
Technology transforms the business when it reduces uncertainty: who the other party is, what was agreed and when the conversation resumes. Wallets, QR, NFC and agentic AI are means. The standard is the same as always, now with fewer excuses: capture well, enrich soon and speak again before the meeting goes cold.
