LinkedIn remains the B2B square
In 2026 LinkedIn has not lost its place as the dominant professional network in B2B. Anyone looking for a buyer, a partner or a senior profile still starts there. That does not mean networking over the next five years is «more LinkedIn». It means the public square stays, and the value moves to the exchange that follows: the detail the other person keeps, the thread that continues and the priority a system assigns when a hundred cards come back from the same fair.
Anyone who measures networking by connection count is measuring the lobby. The work is who remains findable, who replies and who enters the following week with context.
Personal brand outperforms the company page
On engagement, the personal brand already outperforms the corporate page. The buyer comments on a person's post, not on a brand statement. Over the next five years that asymmetry will deepen: algorithms reward a recognizable voice, and buyers distrust content that has no owner.
That does not authorize every salesperson to invent a biography. It authorizes the company to decide who speaks, with which facts and with which live profile behind them. A personal brand without a verifiable destination is noise. A company page without voices is a noticeboard. Effective networking combines the two: the person opens the door; the organization holds the data.
Kantar and Meta found that 79.3% need proof of legitimacy: a title that matches, a visible history and a link that does not die when a mobile number changes.
The contact exchange will change format
The paper card will not vanish entirely in 2027, but it is no longer the standard. The 2026 mix is Wallet, QR, lock-screen QR and NFC. Anyone who goes to a fair with a single format is choosing to lose part of the room. Anyone who carries all four is not «being modern». They are accepting that the other person decides how the detail is stored.
- Wallet: the contact lives next to the passes the phone already treats as stable.
- QR: the exchange works at a distance and at a counter.
- Lock-screen QR: a locked phone is still a card.
- NFC: the tap when there is haste and proximity trust.
Verifiable identity — Gartner projects 500 million digital identity wallets in 2026, and the EU requires member states to offer the EUDI Wallet by year end — will push networking toward the credential. In five years, «I will send you my contact» may include a verifiable claim: role, company, age over 18, without the rest of the file.
After the tap: AI prioritization
The future of networking is not the tap. It is the hour that follows. A hundred profiles collected in a hall are not a network. They are inventory. The next generation will use models to prioritize: who asked for a follow-up, who fits the pipeline, who already interacted on LinkedIn, who left a messaging thread.
That requires two conditions many small firms still lack. First: the digital contact has to be a live profile, not a photo of a card. Second: someone has to define the criterion. AI does not decide who matters to your business. It accelerates a criterion you should already be able to write in one sentence.
67.7% find an AI chatbot helpful and 42.9% believe AI would improve messaging. In networking the utility is not the automatic greeting: it is not losing the person who did want to continue.
What is worth practicing now
The next five years do not ask for a new app every quarter. They ask for habits you can rehearse now. Keep a profile that updates without a reprint. Carry Wallet, QR and NFC on the same card. Treat LinkedIn as a square, not as a CRM. Let people on the team speak in their own voice with a corporate destination. After every event, prioritize the same day: ten good follow-ups are worth more than a CSV nobody opens.
Professional networking will be measured in contacts that are still true six months later, not in handshakes. Anyone who builds that layer now will not have to «adapt» in 2030.
