How to read a trend list in 2026
A business trend is not worth its headline. It is worth something if it changes a concrete decision: how someone is identified, how a contact is handed over, who writes the follow-up and in which system the data lands. In October 2026 those decisions are no longer future tense. They are in regulation, on the phone and inside sales teams.
This list does not forecast 2030. It orders ten facts that already move operations. The test is the same in every item: if the trend does not leave a more useful contact at the 72-hour mark, it is noise.
Verifiable identity at market scale
1. Digital identity wallets on the phone. Gartner estimates about 500 million smartphone users using digital identity wallets in 2026. The professional profile stops being an attachment and moves into a container the person controls.
2. The EU Digital Identity Wallet as an obligation. European Union member states must offer a digital identity wallet this year, under eIDAS 2. That pushes suppliers, banks and companies to accept verifiable credentials, not only forms.
The channels used to share a profile
Digital card sharing already has a measurable mix. There is no need to invent one.
- 3. Apple Wallet leads digital card sharing in 2026.
- 4. QR remains the broad channel: about 28% of shares.
- 5. Lock-screen QR grew around 749% year over year and now accounts for about 13% of exchanges.
- 6. NFC cards are 7% of shares, but they grew 124% versus the previous year.
- 7. The NFC card market is projected at a CAGR near 14.8% toward 2034: a minority channel today, not a residual one.
The lesson is not to pick a single channel. It is to accept that the other person decides how they receive the profile —wallet, QR or tap— and that the sender must work in all three.
Agentic AI in sales, with company controls
8. Agents that prospect, write and follow up. Gartner places agentic AI inside everyday commercial work in 2026. The risk is not that the agent exists. The risk is letting it write without a trust harness: tone, sources, data limits and human approval when the message commits the company.
9. Identity for agents that transact. In August 2026, Cloudflare framed wallets and identity for AI agents that execute transactions. If an agent acts on behalf of the company, it needs an identity as clear as that of the salesperson it represents.
The real work starts after the exchange
10. The value is after the tap. Contact enrichment, CRM entry and follow-up within 24 to 72 hours. Without that stretch, the previous nine trends only accelerate loss: more profiles shared, the same empty inbox on Monday.
This tenth trend is the least spectacular and the most operational. A leadership team can delay a channel. It cannot delay the habit of recording and responding.
Ten trends, one agenda
The list collapses into three decisions. First: where the team’s identity lives. Second: which delivery channels they accept. Third: who —human or agent, with which controls— resumes contact before it goes cold. Anyone who answers those three in 2026 uses the technology. Anyone who does not merely collects it.
